I am Rabbit – holder of multiple Gifts, Sacred Trickster, Reader of Omens, Messenger of Grace. I bring rebirth, as I teach you how to expand your inner life to greater and greater heights. Unstoppable am I, giving birth to worlds within worlds. Wherever your life is sprouting right now, even if it is only in one tiny corner, give that thing your greatest attention. Sprouts in one area are catching, and you will find that soon, other areas are also breaking out of deadlock. This is one of the greatest and simplest secrets of my people.

Have the courage to look into your fear, what do you fear most? Instead of dreading that thing, pre-empt its arrival by contemplating it, and even take a step towards it. Sometimes my people have the habit of stamping our feet when we sense danger. I have given my foot in sacrifice to your people, that you may temper your wild emotions and come back to the safety of the burrow – your centre and home. Whenever your life goes into expansion, you must do two things: celebrate this expansion by following it with joy, and be deeply watchful, because when you are busy, that is when you become prey.

My ears are also my gift to your people – super-sensitive, always rotating, picking up the finest signals to help you find the perfect direction and timing. Fine-tune your life constantly, painting this delicate balance between the inner and the outer, and I will reward you with children and more children.

One final thing: I am one of the sacred tricksters, so you had better laugh whenever you get too serious. Failures are only perceptions. Trust in failure equally as you trust in success and you will learn my deepest secret – the secret of laughter.

Like the hare, the rabbit is chiefly a lunar symbol, often seen as living within the moon and linked to the Earth Mother.

West African – The rabbit is the great trickster who always manages to outwit the hyena.

North America – The rabbit is one of the favourite trickster figures of the forest and is also said to have stolen fire from the gods.

Christian – The rabbit is often depicted at the feet of the Virgin Mary, representing victory over the passions.

Greek – The rabbit was sacred to Aphrodite, due to its sexual fecundity and is also connected with Mercurius.

Aztec – In an old creation myth, the sun threw a rabbit at the moon, making it darker than the sun.

Although the rabbit shares some symbolism with the hare, it has very different qualities, the chief ones being its humility and its tremendous powers of procreation. As a symbol, the rabbit represents this sexual potency at the heart of creation – the evolutionary tendency towards expansion. To work with the rabbit symbol is to work with this ever-expanding creative and cyclical energy, but it is also to work with fear. The rabbit has an ancient connection to fear, which is the antithesis to expansion. Those drawn to this symbol must therefore overcome their own fears before they release the vast power within themselves and their creative energies. One of the keys with the rabbit symbol is to trust in the expansion itself as it always leads one to higher and higher states of synthesis, but the fear always lies in the letting go of each stage along the way.

Expansion comes without effort and emerges naturally, slowly, quietly. It brings calm rather than excitement. It brings simplicity rather than complexity, perspective rather than ambition. It all comes through slowing down. Expansion is always threefold – it is awareness, it is love, and it is creativity, and those three together create a perfect harmony. Awareness without love can be cruel, love without awareness can be painful, and creativity without love can be reckless. It is this last, love, that is most important. We can’t expand without serving others in some way. Service is a by-product of love.
