A sutra is an ancient Indian word meaning ‘thread’ – a short, distilled fragment of wisdom that can be followed deep into contemplation.
For The Sage, Richard began each day before dawn, outside with a cup of tea, hand-writing a single sutra into a large green leather notebook his father had given him. These tiny ‘word threads’ arrived one by one over more than a year, including the very first – The Noble Tangency of Loss, written soon after his father’s death. In the book, each sutra becomes the heart of a line: a compact, poetic code that carries the feeling, myth and guidance of that particular current of consciousness.
On each graphic, the brush-stroke hexagram and the small number beneath it (for example, 5.6) show the Gene Key and specific line that this sutra is linked to, so you can immediately see where it lives in the I Ching – and, if it’s in your profile, where it lives in you.

Unlike the original Gene Keys book, The Sage has no shadow teachings. It is written as a codex for the next epoch – a handbook to help us cross the current planetary threshold with more grace.
