The process of transmutation has actually been described very well by the alchemists. It consists of an endless series of small and often indecipherable mutations leading to a finite number of transmutations. These transmutations are huge turning points in your life. To transmute is to make a quantum leap into a whole new dimension.

The Four Hoops – A Map of the Human Mind

Fragment of Light Series

In 2006, during an intense period of exploring genetics, the I Ching and the deeper patterns woven through human consciousness, Richard came upon an idea he called the Four Hoops.

20 years later, he returns to it.

The model begins with two of humanity’s oldest questions: Is there a God? Do we have free will? From these arise four fundamental ways of seeing reality – four ‘hoops’ that can shape how we understand freedom, responsibility, surrender, meaning and one another.

Here, Richard traces his own surprising journey through several of these worlds and explores why the question of free will may be becoming even more important in the age of AI.

Yet the deeper invitation of the Four Hoops lies at the centre of the circle.

Can we become spacious enough to understand a worldview very different from our own? Can disagreement become a source of illumination rather than division? Can we hold our own beliefs deeply while remaining curious about the ground upon which another person stands?

A playful and timely Fragment of Light on the human mind, the mystery of free will and the possibility of a deeper peace.
